A new opensource AI application called NotebookLlama from Meta creates an audio podcast from PDF files by having two AI hosts chat. NotebookLlama, built using three Llama 3.1 models, produces a podcaststyle transcript, preprocesses the PDF, and converts it to audio using Parler TTS. It was created to compete with Googles NotebookLM and to increase the accessibility of textbased content in audio format. The suggested configuration calls for a robust GPU and about 140GB of RAM, while lowerend devices may be utilised at the expense of quality. Robotic audio and overlapping speech were identified as problems in early feedback Meta intends to fix these in subsequent versions by enhancing the texttovoice pipeline and expanding file format support.
