A largescale energy storage system for sodiumsulfur batteries will be installed at an old LNG terminal in Japan. Toho Gas, an integrated utility serving 54 cities in three central prefectures of Japan, has ordered an 11.4 MW/69.6 MWh NAS system. The hightemperature battery is suitable for longterm use and can be discharged to its full capacity for 6 hours. The batteries are connected to the electricity grid to store power generated in the offseason and during periods of abundant renewable energy generation and are discharged to supplement the grid during peak hours. NAS batteries are designed to last 15 years, the equivalent of about 4,500 cycles over that period, or about 300 cycles per year.
