Michael Ackland, director of the Consumer and Small Business Group, said the move builds on an earlier move from last August when there were no standard calls and texts from payphones. Ackland said the initiatives priority was to provide improved power reliability and WiFi capabilities to Telstras 1,000 pay phones in disasterprone areas. The operator said it made almost 19 million free calls from Telstra phones last year, including over 250,000 calls to essential services such as Triple Zero000 and Lifeline.
